There is one certainty when it comes to interviewing with a law firm or corporate legal department - your interviewer will ask you questions. This is true no matter if you’re applying for an attorney position, paralegal position, support staff opportunity, or administrative assistant job. If you know the questions are coming, then why not prepare for them? The following are some of the most frequent questions candidates have told us they’ve been asked during a legal interview.

Sample Interview Questions

  • How would your friends/co-workers describe you?
  • What do you value in life?
  • What is your definition of “success?”
  • What are your strengths?
  • What are your weaknesses?
  • Why did you choose the legal profession?
  • Why did you leave your prior jobs?
  • What are your goals?
  • What is your ideal job? Ideal job setting?
  • What do you know about our company/firm?
  • Why do you want to work here?
  • What qualifications do you have that will make you succeed in this role?
  • What makes you different from other candidates?
  • What do you think will be the most challenging part of this job?
  • What type of salary are you looking for?
  • What type of people do you work best with?
  • How do you deal with stress?

Tips on Answering

We can’t just give you a list of interview questions and wish you luck when the big day comes. LAW DAWGS is about providing a complete package when it comes to placing candidates in legal positions. Thus, let’s focus on some tips that you should consider when providing an interview answer. Please note that these are not listed in any order of importance – they’re all important!

  1. Try to make answers simple and articulate.
  2. Be honest and confident, but don’t come across as arrogant.
  3. If answering a question involving a weakness, be open and sincere while also looking for ways to spin weaknesses into positives.
  4. Let interviewers know that you have career goals and a plan on accomplishing those goals.
  5. Find ways to touch on specific experiences that are directly relevant to the position at hand.
  6. Convince the interviewer that you want the position you’re interviewing for – and not just looking to merely take the job because it’s open.
  7. Demonstrate that you’re a team player.
  8. Sell yourself. Persuade your interviewer that you’re the best fit for the opening you seek to fill.

Finally, keep in mind that you must practice your answers. Think about potential interview questions and put together specific answers. Practice reciting them. Some candidates like to write answers out first. If this works for you, go for it. A main goal in practicing is to gain confidence. You also want your answers to come off effort-less, but with impact and assertiveness.
